For teenagers, mental health can be affected by a lot more than what is happening emotionally. School, friendships, family life, sleep, nutrition, stress, and major changes during adolescence can all play a role in how a teen feels and functions day to day.

Looking at the Whole Picture

Every teenager is different, which is why treatment should be personalized. When a teen is struggling with anxiety, depression, difficulty concentrating, mood changes, or problems with sleep, there can be several factors contributing to those symptoms. The goal is to better understand what a teenager is experiencing and create a treatment plan that fits their specific needs.

Dr. Vyas uses precision medicine to explore factors that may contribute to a child's symptoms. When appropriate, lab testing can assess nutrient levels and provide information about how a person may process certain medications. More detailed genetic testing may also be considered to help guide treatment decisions.

Integrative functional psychiatry looks beyond symptoms to consider the foundations that support mental well-being. Nutrients such as magnesium, zinc, copper, and omega fatty acids play important roles in the body's processes, including those involved in mood. Testing can help identify areas that may need attention as part of an individualized care plan.

Dr. Vyas also considers the gut–brain connection. The balance of gut bacteria may be one factor associated with mood, concentration, and overall functioning. When clinically appropriate, testing can help assess the gut microbiome and inform strategies to support gut health.

Understanding Teen Mental Health

The teenage years can come with a lot of pressure. Schoolwork, sports, social situations, relationships, college planning, and changes at home can all contribute to stress.

It is normal for teenagers to have ups and downs, but ongoing changes in mood or behavior may be worth paying attention to. Signs such as withdrawing from friends and family, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty keeping up with school, increased anxiety, or losing interest in activities they normally enjoy can be reasons for parents to reach out for professional support.

A Personalized Integrative Approach for Teens

Dr. Vyas offers an integrative, functional, and holistic approach to mental health care. Her integrative approach allows mental health to be considered alongside other areas of health and daily life. Care is tailored to each individual, with the goal of understanding contributing factors and developing a thoughtful treatment plan. Testing and treatment recommendations depend on a person's needs.

Whether you are seeking child, adolescent, or adult psychiatry, she provides precision treatment tailored to each individual's unique biology, symptoms, history, lifestyle, needs, and personal goals.

Understanding the unique challenges individuals and families may face, Dr. Vyas delivers compassionate, personalized care through convenient in-person or virtual psychiatry and therapy services.

Mental health treatment is not one-size-fits-all, and building trust can make a big difference. For parents, knowing when to seek help can sometimes be difficult. If changes in your teenager's mood, behavior, sleep, school performance, or overall well-being are continuing or becoming more noticeable, speaking with a mental health professional can be a good place to start.

By Hema Vyas, M.D.

Mental health treatment is not always one-size-fits-all. While two people may experience similar symptoms, the reasons behind those symptoms can be very different. This is one reason some patients are interested in a more personalized approach to psychiatric care.

Dr. Hema Vyas, M.D., Psychiatrist, uses a holistic approach that looks at the whole person rather than focusing only on individual symptoms. Her approach may include traditional psychiatric care along with areas such as nutrition, lifestyle, mindfulness, meditation, sleep, gut health, and other factors that may influence a person’s mental and emotional well-being.

Looking Beyond Symptoms

Traditional psychiatric treatment often focuses on managing symptoms through therapy, medication, or a combination of both. Medications such as antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or stimulants can be an important part of treatment for many patients.

Integrative functional psychiatry does not necessarily replace these treatments. Instead, Dr. Vyas may also look at other factors that could be contributing to symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, low energy, poor sleep, changes in mood, anxiety, or problems with motivation. In addition, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic concerns, habits, stress, sleep patterns, and other underlying factors may sometimes affect how a person feels physically and emotionally.

How Does Integrative Functional Psychiatry Work?

Depending on the patient, integrative functional psychiatry may include targeted laboratory testing. These tests can sometimes help identify nutritional deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, or other factors that may be affecting overall health and brain function.

Not every patient will need the same testing, and some specialized tests may not be covered by insurance. Dr. Vyas discusses recommendations individually based on a patient’s symptoms, concerns, and goals.

If testing identifies an area that may need attention, the results can help guide a more personalized treatment plan. This could include changes involving nutrition, supplementation, gut health, lifestyle habits, sleep, stress management, or medication when appropriate.

The goal is to look at as many relevant pieces of a patient’s health as possible instead of treating one symptom in isolation.

The Connection Between Nutrition and Mental Health

Nutrition can play an important role in both physical and mental well-being. The body relies on different vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to support many important functions, including those involving the brain.

Dr. Vyas may consider whether nutritional deficiencies could be affecting a patient’s mood, focus, motivation, energy, or overall sense of well-being.

She may also look at the relationship between gut health and mental health. The gut and brain communicate with one another, which is why digestive health and gut bacteria may be considered as part of a broader mental health evaluation.

This does not mean that changes in diet or supplements will replace psychiatric treatment. Instead, these factors may be considered alongside therapy, medication, mindfulness techniques, and other forms of support when appropriate.

How Can This Help Children and Teens?

Integrative functional psychiatry may be very useful when dealing with younger patients.

Dr. Vyas specializes in working with children and adolescents and treats concerns including anxiety, depression, ADHD, and ADD. For a child or teen with ADHD, for example, she may look at whether nutritional deficiencies, sleep, lifestyle habits, or other underlying factors could be contributing to symptoms. Addressing these areas may provide additional support alongside standard psychiatric treatment.

Every child is different, which is why medication and other treatment decisions are made individually. The goal is not simply to avoid medication but to determine which combination of approaches may be most helpful for that particular patient.

What About College Students and Young Adults?

College students may also be interested in integrative functional psychiatry, especially if they are looking for a more holistic approach to managing anxiety, depression, attention difficulties, stress, sleep problems, or other concerns.

Some students may be hesitant about taking stimulant medication or may feel that their current treatment plan is not fully addressing their needs. In these situations, an integrative evaluation may provide another way to look at what could be contributing to their symptoms.

Dr. Vyas can work with patients to determine whether lifestyle changes, nutritional support, mindfulness, medication, or other treatment options should be considered.

Is Integrative Functional Psychiatry Right for You?

If you or your child are currently receiving mental health treatment but feel like something may still be missing, integrative functional psychiatry may offer another perspective.

At Central Jersey Psychiatric Consultants, Dr. Hema Vyas focuses on developing an individualized treatment plan based on each person’s symptoms, experiences, lifestyle, and overall needs. By combining traditional psychiatric care with a broader look at physical health, nutrition, mindfulness, and other contributing factors, the goal is to help patients find an approach that works for them.

Dr. Vyas works with children, adolescents, and adults and treats conditions including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD and ADD, OCD, trauma-related concerns, and other mood disorders. She is board certified in both child and adolescent psychiatry and adult psychiatry and is licensed in both New Jersey and New York.

A consultation with Dr. Hema Vyas can help determine whether integrative functional psychiatry, targeted lab testing, or other personalized treatment options may be appropriate.
